In short: When Disney released its 2010 animated feature, the title had shifted from the classic Rapunzel to Tangled. This move sparked significant backlash from critics who viewed it as a desperate, gender-biased marketing ploy. Yet, the studio maintained that the change was essential to reflect the film's dual-protagonist narrative structure.

The production of Tangled was a massive undertaking, costing an estimated $260 million and spanning six years. Originally conceived by animator Glen Keane in 2001, the project underwent several iterations, including a version titled Rapunzel Unbraided that featured a modern San Francisco setting. By the time directors Byron Howard and Nathan Greno took over in 2008, the studio was committed to a 3D computer-generated aesthetic that still honored the fluid, organic feel of traditional hand-drawn animation.

The title change became a flashpoint for controversy. Following the performance of The Princess and the Frog, Disney executives feared that including 'princess' in the title would alienate male audiences. Critics like Margot Magowan accused the studio of sexism, while others compared the rebranding to renaming The Little Mermaid as Beached. However, John Lasseter later clarified that the goal was to reach all 'four quadrants' of the audience, ensuring that viewers who might avoid a film perceived as being only for little girls would give it a chance.

Beyond the marketing debate, the film pushed technical boundaries. Animators struggled to create realistic hair movement until they developed specialized programs like Dynamic Wires. To achieve a lush, painterly look, they utilized non-photorealistic rendering and drew inspiration from the Rococo art of Jean-Honoré Fragonard. The final product, which earned $592 million, remains a landmark in the studio's history, blending musical-theater storytelling with modern 3D techniques to create a unique, enduring legacy.
