Why a major Brazilian telenovela changed its name to avoid political controversy
In short: Before it became the hit series Terra e Paixão, this Brazilian drama faced a naming crisis. Producers feared its original title, Terra Vermelha, carried unintended political baggage that could be linked to the Workers' Party. The production team navigated several alternatives before settling on the final, evocative title.
Created by Walcyr Carrasco for TV Globo, Terra e Paixão aired from 8 May 2023 to 19 January 2024. The development process began in December 2021, but the project hit early hurdles regarding its identity. The initial working title, Terra Vermelha (Red Earth), was abandoned for two primary reasons: it conflicted with a book by Domingos Pellegrini, and the network worried the color red would be perceived as a political statement aligned with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's party.
The search for a new identity saw several contenders, including Eu Sou a Terra, Terra Mãe, and Terra Dourada. After briefly settling on Terra Bruta, the network finally confirmed Terra e Paixão in February 2023. Behind the scenes, the production faced further shifts. Director Amora Mautner left the project following creative disagreements with Carrasco, leading to her replacement by Luiz Henrique Rios. The pair traveled to Mato Grosso do Sul in late 2022 to scout locations, eventually filming in Dourados and Deodápolis.
Casting also underwent significant revisions to meet network mandates. While Agatha Moreira was initially slated for the lead, Globo enforced a policy to ensure better racial representation in central roles. Consequently, Moreira was moved to an antagonist position. After considering Erika Januza and Larissa Nunes, the team cast Bárbara Reis as the lead. To ensure authenticity, the production hired indigenous writer Daniel Munduruku to advise on themes concerning native peoples, grounding the fictional narrative in a more considered cultural context.
