A cinematic blockbuster commissioned to commemorate a century of Chinese Communist Party history
In short: Produced with a massive budget and the participation of 70,000 soldiers as extras, this war drama dramatizes the Korean War's Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. It shattered domestic box office records, serving as both a high-stakes entertainment spectacle and a state-commissioned project reflecting on a pivotal military confrontation.
Commissioned by the Central Propaganda Department to mark the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, The Battle at Lake Changjin stands as a monumental production in Chinese cinema. Directed by a trio of prominent filmmakers—Chen Kaige, Tsui Hark, and Dante Lam—the project required extensive resources, including a production budget exceeding $200 million. Filming took place between October 2020 and May 2021, utilizing locations across China and involving 70,000 People's Liberation Army soldiers as extras to achieve its grand scale.
The narrative centers on the 7th Company of the People's Volunteer Army, following the fictionalized experiences of brothers Wu Qianli and Wu Wanli during the Korean War. The film depicts the Chinese forces' efforts to repel American advances, culminating in the evacuation of U.S. troops from Hungnam by December 24, 1950. While the film achieved immense commercial success, grossing $913 million worldwide, it has faced criticism regarding historical accuracy and its role as a vehicle for state messaging.
Upon its release in September 2021, the film quickly dominated the Chinese market, eventually surpassing the long-standing record held by Wolf Warrior 2 to become the top-earning domestic film in history. It maintained this status until February 2025, when it was overtaken by Ne Zha 2. Despite its popularity, the film remains a subject of international debate, with observers in various countries noting its controversial depiction of historical events and its clear alignment with official state narratives.
