Why a notorious fugitive spent a decade helping the FBI hunt global criminals
In short: Raymond Reddington, a high-ranking FBI fugitive, surrendered to authorities to offer a unique deal: he would help capture dangerous criminals unknown to the government. In exchange, he demanded immunity and a partnership with a specific rookie profiler. This alliance launched a ten-season saga of secrets, betrayal, and high-stakes international intrigue.
The Blacklist premiered in September 2013, centering on the mysterious Raymond Reddington, a former naval intelligence officer turned master criminal. After vanishing for two decades, he walked into the J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, D.C., to surrender to Harold Cooper, the assistant director of the FBI's counterterrorism division. Reddington proposed a mutual interest in eliminating a list of global terrorists and criminals he had compiled throughout his career, provided he could work exclusively with Elizabeth Keen, a new profiler on Cooper's team.
For eight seasons, the show explored the complex, often dangerous connection between Reddington and Keen. As the task force neutralized targets from the blacklist, Keen relentlessly investigated Reddington's true identity and his inexplicable obsession with her. The narrative reached a breaking point in season 8 when Keen was killed, leading to the temporary disbandment of the task force and Reddington's flight from the country. The series, however, continued for two more seasons, shifting focus toward the remaining team members and Reddington's efforts to manage his crumbling criminal empire.
The show's final act saw the task force facing scrutiny from Congressman Arthur Hudson, who suspected the unit of operating outside the law. This pressure eventually forced Cooper to attempt an arrest of his long-time informant. Reddington managed to evade capture but met an ironic end in Andalusia, where he was fatally gored by a bull. Despite the series' long run and its exploration of Reddington's past, the central mystery regarding his true identity and his specific interference in Elizabeth Keen's life remained officially unexplained when the show concluded in July 2023.
