How a paralyzed man used a single blinking eye to write a masterpiece
In short: After a massive stroke left Jean-Dominique Bauby with locked-in syndrome, he was trapped in his own body. Yet, he managed to write a memoir by blinking his left eye to select letters. The resulting film, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, captures this extraordinary struggle through his own perspective.
The 2007 film, directed by Julian Schnabel, chronicles the life of Jean-Dominique Bauby, the former editor of Elle magazine. Following a stroke that left him almost entirely paralyzed yet mentally alert, Bauby found himself in a state known as locked-in syndrome. The film’s opening act places the viewer directly behind Bauby’s eyes, forcing an experience of his isolation as he wakes in a hospital in Berck-sur-Mer, France. Unable to speak, he communicates by blinking his left eye as a therapist recites the alphabet, a grueling process that allowed him to dictate his memoir.
The title reflects the duality of his existence: the 'diving bell' represents his heavy, immobile body, while the 'butterfly' symbolizes his free, vibrant spirit. As the narrative progresses, the camera breaks away from his restricted point of view to explore his memories, fantasies, and regrets. The film juxtaposes his physical confinement with the lives of others, including his 92-year-old father, who is unable to leave his apartment, and a friend who endured four years of solitary confinement. These parallels highlight the universal nature of human entrapment.
Production of the film was a complex endeavor. Originally intended to be an English-language project starring Johnny Depp, it was eventually produced in French after Schnabel insisted that the language of the original memoir was essential to the story. The film achieved universal critical acclaim, earning four Oscar nominations and a place on numerous lists of the best films of the 21st century. Despite his success, Bauby died of pneumonia just ten days after his book was published, leaving behind a profound testament to the resilience of the human mind in the face of total physical adversity.
