In short: In Max Ophüls' 1953 masterpiece, a set of diamond earrings circulates through high-society Paris, acting as a silent witness to a marriage defined by emptiness and a love affair doomed by deceit. This glittering prop drives a narrative of obsession, duels, and the tragic cost of a superficial life.

The Earrings of Madame de... centers on an aristocratic woman, Louise, who sells her wedding gift earrings to cover debts, sparking a cycle of ownership that mirrors her own hollow existence. The film, based on Louise Lévêque de Vilmorin’s 1951 novel, follows the jewelry as it passes from the jeweler Rémy to the countess’s husband, André, then to his mistress, and eventually to an Italian diplomat, Baron Fabrizio Donati. As the earrings return to Louise, they become a talisman of her illicit love for Donati, forcing her to weave a web of lies that ultimately destroys her.

Director Max Ophüls utilized the earrings as a central axis around which the film’s action rotates. Known for his fluid, swirling camera work, Ophüls collaborated with art director Georges Annenkov to craft an atmosphere of opulent Belle Époque luxury. Despite the film's visual splendor, critics remain divided on its depth. While some, like Andrew Sarris, have hailed it as the most perfect film ever made, others, such as Lindsay Anderson, argued that the dazzling technical execution and visual frou-frou distract from the characters' internal development.

The film’s production was a triumph of discipline. Having learned from the budget overruns of his 1950 film La Ronde, Ophüls prepared meticulously, finishing this project ahead of schedule and under budget. Though it received mixed reviews upon its 1953 release, its reputation has grown significantly. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design and has since been cited as a favorite by directors including Stanley Kubrick, Wes Anderson, and Edgar Wright. In 2022, it was ranked the 90th greatest film of all time in the Sight and Sound critics poll.
