How Nazi propaganda used staged documentary footage to dehumanize an entire population
In short: The 1940 film The Eternal Jew was not a documentary, but a calculated exercise in manipulation. By staging scenes of Jewish life and juxtaposing them with footage of rats, the Nazi regime sought to justify genocide by framing a minority group as a parasitic threat to the German state.
Directed by Fritz Hippler at the behest of Joseph Goebbels, The Eternal Jew was designed to counter earlier films that portrayed Jews as victims of history. While Hippler claimed to capture Jews in their natural state, the production was entirely staged. In one instance, a synagogue congregation was coerced into performing a service on a Tuesday, a day when such rituals were not customary, to provide the propaganda ministry with the footage they required.
The film’s narrative relied on a series of dehumanizing analogies, most notably comparing the migration of Jews to the movement of rats. This visual metaphor was intended to suggest that Jews were an insidious, underground force responsible for disease and corruption. By blending archival footage with staged scenes from Polish ghettos, the film attempted to conflate all Jewish people with the impoverished Ashkenazim of Eastern Europe, portraying them as a singular, dangerous entity that had merely donned the mask of a civilized European.
To bolster its claims of Jewish dominance, the film presented fabricated statistics, alleging that Jews held disproportionate control over professions like law and medicine. These figures were gross exaggerations of the 1933 German census data. Furthermore, the film blamed Jews for economic instability, using the wealth of the Rothschild family to misrepresent the financial status of the broader Jewish population. These blatant falsehoods were not intended to be factual, but to incite the German public to demand the very violence that the Nazi leadership had already begun to orchestrate.
