Before the suspense master became a legend, he directed this charming 1928 romantic comedy
In short: Long before Alfred Hitchcock was synonymous with psychological thrillers, he directed The Farmer's Wife, a silent romantic comedy based on a 1916 play. The film follows a widower’s clumsy, rejected attempts to find a new spouse, only to realize the perfect partner has been in his home all along.
Released in 1928, The Farmer's Wife captures a lighter side of Alfred Hitchcock’s early career. Produced by British International Pictures at Elstree studios, the film stars Jameson Thomas as Samuel Sweetland, a farmer who finds himself suddenly alone after his wife, Tibby, passes away and his daughter marries. Following his late wife’s advice to remarry, Sweetland enlists his housekeeper, Minta, to help him draft a list of potential candidates from the local community.
The narrative unfolds as a series of comedic humiliations. Sweetland approaches several women, including the independent Widow Louisa Windeatt, the nervous Thirza Tapper, and the barmaid Mercy Bassett, only to be rejected by each one. His pursuit is marked by increasing desperation and social blunders, often observed by his surly handyman, Churdles Ash. The film’s humor relies on these awkward interactions, set against the backdrop of rural life, featuring scenes like a fox hunt and Sweetland traveling through the countryside on horseback.
The resolution arrives when Sweetland finally notices Minta, played by Lillian Hall-Davis, as more than just his housekeeper. After his string of failures, he approaches her with newfound humility. The climax involves a classic comedic misunderstanding when two of his previous rejects arrive at his home expecting a proposal, only to discover that Minta has already accepted his offer. The film was later restored in 2012 as part of the British Film Institute’s £2 million project to preserve Hitchcock’s nine surviving silent works, ensuring this early piece of his filmography remains accessible to modern audiences.
