How a decade of development hell birthed Netflix's most expensive action franchise
In short: After languishing in production limbo for years, The Gray Man finally arrived in 2022 as a high-stakes, star-studded gamble for Netflix. Directed by the Russo brothers, this action thriller centers on a rogue CIA operative fighting to expose corruption while being hunted by a sociopathic mercenary across the globe.
The journey of The Gray Man to the screen was far from linear. Originally announced in 2011 with James Gray attached to direct Brad Pitt, the project cycled through various iterations, including a planned gender-swapped version starring Charlize Theron. It remained in development hell until July 2020, when the Russo brothers officially took the helm. With a production budget exceeding $200 million, the film stands as one of the most expensive original features ever commissioned by Netflix.
The plot follows Courtland Gentry, a prisoner recruited into the CIA's elite Sierra program in 2003. By 2021, Gentry—now known as Sierra Six—uncovers evidence of corruption involving his superior, Denny Carmichael. This discovery triggers a relentless pursuit by Lloyd Hansen, a sociopathic mercenary hired to retrieve the incriminating data. The narrative spans international locations, from Bangkok to Prague and Croatia, culminating in a complex cover-up that leaves the fates of key characters unresolved.
Upon its release in July 2022, the film received a polarized reception. While critics praised the ensemble cast and the technical execution of its action sequences, many pointed to a derivative script and uneven pacing. Despite mixed reviews, the film achieved significant viewership, recording over 253 million hours watched by September 2022. Netflix has since committed to expanding the property into a franchise, with a sequel and a spin-off currently in development to further explore the world of the Sierra program.
The production process was equally ambitious, involving extensive location shooting across three countries between March and July 2021. The film's score, composed by Henry Jackman, reflects the scale of the project, beginning with a 17-minute suite. As Netflix looks to build a cinematic universe, the success of this initial entry serves as a cornerstone for their ongoing partnership with the Russo brothers and their production company, AGBO.
