In short: When a polite veteran arrives at the Peterson home claiming to be their fallen son's best friend, he seems like a blessing. But as mysterious deaths plague the town, the family's daughter begins to suspect their charming guest is hiding a lethal, programmed secret behind his calm and cool exterior.

Released in 2014, The Guest follows David Collins, a former U.S. Army sergeant who embeds himself within the Peterson family after the death of their son in Afghanistan. Directed by Adam Wingard and scripted by Simon Barrett, the film leans into 1980s aesthetic sensibilities, utilizing a synth-heavy soundtrack by Steve Moore and vibrant, high-contrast cinematography. The project was born from Barrett’s fascination with characters harboring hidden interiors, a theme he previously explored in collaborations like You're Next.

The production process was notably expedited, with Dan Stevens cast as the lead because Wingard viewed him as the only viable choice for the role. To prepare, Stevens underwent rigorous physical training to build muscle. While the film was a critical success—holding a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—it faced challenges during development. Test audiences initially struggled with the plot's pacing and the sudden introduction of the KPG, a private military organization hunting David. Consequently, the filmmakers cut scenes that explicitly explained David's origins and the KPG program, preferring to maintain an air of ambiguity regarding his true nature.

The film’s legacy has evolved beyond its initial theatrical run. Although a direct feature sequel was never produced, a 2022 soundtrack release titled The Guest 2 sparked renewed interest. Wingard has since confirmed that his 2026 film Onslaught shares a continuity with The Guest, centering on the same KPG organization. This shared universe links the super-soldier experiments seen in the 2014 film to broader, darker narratives involving Nazi-descended scientists and corporate-military programs. Despite the lack of a traditional sequel, the franchise continues to expand, with Wingard and Stevens discussing potential future installments that could manifest as either films or limited series.
