A veteran bodyguard faces his past while protecting a target from a rap mogul
In short: In this 2006 action film, a traumatized soldier struggles to rebuild his life while managing a high-stakes security detail. Tasked with protecting a retired boxing champion from a vengeful criminal, he must navigate internal betrayal and his own reputation as a dangerous killer to survive the mission.
The Hard Corps, directed by Sheldon Lettich and released in 2006, features Jean-Claude Van Damme as Phillip Sauvage, a veteran suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder following his service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sauvage is hired to protect Wayne Barclay, a former heavyweight champion turned businessman, who has become the target of a notorious rap mogul named Terrell Singletery. The production, which marked the fourth collaboration between Van Damme and Lettich, was filmed over 39 days in Vancouver and four days in Bucharest between late 2005 and early 2006.
The narrative centers on the friction between Sauvage’s disciplined, military-style security tactics and the amateurish nature of Barclay’s existing staff. As the team faces repeated hit squads, Sauvage must contend with accusations from a detective that he is an unstable killer responsible for massacring children during his military service. This tension culminates in a series of confrontations that reveal corruption within the local police force, specifically involving Detective Teague, who is secretly working for Singletery. The plot forces the protagonist to reconcile his violent history with his current role as a protector.
Critical reception of the film has been mixed. While some reviewers noted that the movie offers a more polished experience than contemporary action films starring Steven Seagal, others criticized its slow pacing. Ian Jane of DVD Talk awarded the film 2.5 out of 5 stars, describing it as lacking in overall compelling quality. Despite these critiques, the film remains a notable entry in the direct-to-video action genre, highlighting the recurring themes of redemption and professional duty often explored in Van Damme’s later career.
The film’s resolution sees the security team successfully infiltrating the antagonist's compound to rescue Barclay’s sister, Tamara. The final conflict results in the death of Singletery at the hands of Barclay and the survival of Sauvage, who is protected by his vest. The story concludes with the characters finding a sense of closure, as Barclay reconciles with his sister and Sauvage begins a new chapter in his personal life.
