In short: John Woo’s 1989 masterpiece, The Killer, was initially a commercial disappointment in its home market. Yet, its balletic violence and themes of honor transformed it into a cult phenomenon. From influencing Quentin Tarantino to shaping the aesthetic of 90s hip-hop, this film redefined the action genre for a generation.

The Killer follows Ah Jong, a professional hitman who accidentally blinds a nightclub singer named Jennie during a job. Seeking redemption, he accepts one final contract to pay for her sight-restoring surgery. Simultaneously, Detective Li Ying becomes obsessed with the assassin’s moral code, leading to a complex relationship between two men on opposite sides of the law. Director John Woo, who wrote the script while filming, drew inspiration from the Spy vs. Spy comics in Mad Magazine to illustrate this oppositional pairing.

Production was fraught with difficulty. After the studio rejected his initial pitch, actor Chow Yun-fat helped secure funding through his own company. Woo, working with a rough draft, relied on improvisation and his own stylistic flourishes, such as the use of doves to represent spirits. The film’s iconic final shootout, set in a church, took 36 days to film. Woo intentionally used religious imagery not to make a religious film, but to suggest that God welcomes both the good and the bad.

While the film struggled in Hong Kong following the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, it achieved international acclaim. Critics praised its "eye-popping balletic violence" and "philosophical underpinnings." Its influence is vast: it inspired directors like Luc Besson and Robert Rodriguez, and its dialogue was famously sampled on Raekwon’s 1995 hip-hop album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.... Today, it is widely considered one of the greatest action films ever made, standing as a testament to Woo’s unique vision of honor, friendship, and kinetic style.
