Why Disney's Lion Guard broke a royal tradition to save the Pride Lands
In short: The Lion Guard, a spin-off of the 1994 classic The Lion King, reimagines the defense of the Pride Lands. Led by Simba’s son Kion, the team defies tradition by recruiting a diverse group of animals, proving that protecting the circle of life requires more than just lions.
Debuting in 2015, The Lion Guard follows Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala. Traditionally, this role is reserved for the king's second child, who leads a team of lions to protect the realm. However, Kion breaks this mold by selecting his closest friends: Bunga the honey badger, Fuli the cheetah, Beshte the hippopotamus, and Ono the western cattle egret. Together, they wield the Roar of the Elders, a powerful ability that can be corrupted if used in anger or for malicious purposes.
The series spans three seasons, chronicling the group's evolution from childhood to adolescence. A central conflict emerges in the second season when the spirit of Kion’s great-uncle, Scar, returns to orchestrate the destruction of the Pride Lands. This threat forces the team into an all-out war against an army of Outlanders. By the third season, the guards must travel to the Tree of Life in Asia to recover from severe injuries sustained during their final confrontation with Scar, including Kion’s venomous facial scar and Ono’s vision loss.
The narrative concludes with a significant shift in leadership. While Kion and his team are away, Vitani forms a new, all-lion Guard to protect the Pride Lands. Upon their return, Kion recognizes Vitani’s capability and leadership, allowing her team to take over the defense of the territory. Kion ultimately settles at the Tree of Life, marrying Queen Rani and assuming the role of king, marking a permanent transition in his journey from a rebellious prince to a sovereign ruler.
The show is notable for its expansion of the franchise's lore, introducing new allies like the hyena Jasiri and the Night Pride. It also explores the complex history of the Pride Lands, detailing how Scar originally misused the Roar of the Elders to destroy his own guard, a tragedy that set the stage for the series' central struggle against his lingering influence.
