How a failed black-ops mission in Bolivia became a high-stakes global conspiracy thriller
In short: After a betrayal leaves them stranded and presumed dead, an elite Special Forces team turns rogue to hunt down a corrupt official. Armed with stolen secrets and a vendetta, they must stop a weapon capable of global destruction while navigating a web of deception that spans continents and personal histories.
The 2010 action comedy The Losers, directed by Sylvain White, adapts the first two volumes of the Vertigo comic book series by Andy Diggle and Jock. The narrative follows an elite black-ops team—Clay, Roque, Pooch, Jensen, and Cougar—who are abandoned in Bolivia after their superior, Max, orders a missile strike on their extraction helicopter. The team fakes their deaths, eventually returning to the United States to dismantle Max’s operation after discovering he is selling "Snukes," or Sonic Nukes, to international terrorists.
The film’s production was a complex logistical effort. Although the story moves through locations like Miami, Dubai, and Mumbai, the majority of principal photography took place in Puerto Rico between July and October 2009. The production team utilized the island’s diverse geography to simulate various international settings, including using a rainforest to double for Bolivia. Director Sylvain White emphasized a distinct visual identity for each location, collaborating with cinematographer Scott Kevan to assign specific color palettes to different chapters of the film, mirroring the aesthetic shifts found in the original graphic novels.
The cast features Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the team leader Clay, alongside Chris Evans, Zoe Saldaña, Idris Elba, Columbus Short, and Óscar Jaenada. Jason Patric portrays the antagonist, Max, a corrupt official whose ultimate goal is to trigger global conflict to consolidate power. Upon its release on April 23, 2010, the film received mixed critical reception, holding a 47% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While some critics noted its violent and loud nature, others praised the performances and humor, ultimately resulting in a "B" grade from CinemaScore audiences.
