How a buffoonish mayor outwitted the German army to save a million bottles of wine
In short: In the summer of 1943, the residents of a small Italian hill town faced a desperate crisis: German forces were coming to seize their only source of income. Led by an unlikely mayor, the villagers executed a brilliant, high-stakes deception to hide their entire wine supply from the occupying army.
Set against the backdrop of Italy’s 1943 political collapse, The Secret of Santa Vittoria follows the townspeople as they scramble to protect their livelihood from the arriving German detachment. The town’s new mayor, Italo Bombolini, was initially appointed by pro-Mussolini politicians as a joke, viewed by his own wife as a buffoon. Yet, under his leadership, the villagers managed to seal one million bottles of wine within the galleries of an ancient Roman cave.
The conflict centers on a battle of wits between Bombolini and the German commander, Captain Sepp Von Prum. When the Germans arrived, they expected to find a massive cache but were left with only a fraction of the total. Suspicious, Von Prum interrogated the town, even resorting to torture. In a stroke of genius, the villagers directed the Germans to torture the former pro-Mussolini politicians, who had been arrested early on and genuinely possessed no knowledge of the hidden wine.
The film, released in 1969 and directed by Stanley Kramer, is based on Robert Crichton’s 1966 novel. Despite receiving Golden Globe nominations and winning the award for Best Motion Picture Comedy, it faced harsh criticism from reviewers like Vincent Canby, who felt the adaptation lacked the nuance of the source material. While it earned $6.5 million worldwide, the production was ultimately viewed as a commercial disappointment given the massive popularity of the original book.
