A mistaken book delivery led to this classic 1960 Australian outback drama
In short: When director Fred Zinnemann received the wrong novel from a friend, he accidentally discovered the source material for his acclaimed film, The Sundowners. This 1960 drama captures the nomadic life of an Australian sheep-herding family, balancing the father's wanderlust against his wife and son's desperate longing for a permanent home.
The production of The Sundowners was defined by serendipity and stubborn commitment. Zinnemann intended to film a different book, but after receiving Jon Cleary's 1952 novel by mistake, he immediately secured the screen rights. He insisted on shooting on location across Australia, rejecting studio pressure to film in Arizona or Texas. Filming began in 1959, with the crew enduring volatile weather that shifted from extreme heat to cold rain, eventually wrapping on December 17, 1959.
The film follows Paddy Carmody, a sheep drover played by Robert Mitchum, and his wife Ida, portrayed by Deborah Kerr. The narrative explores the tension between Paddy's nomadic lifestyle and his family's desire to settle on a farm. Despite the film's critical success—earning five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director—it was a financial failure in the United States. However, it found significant popularity abroad, ranking as the third-highest-grossing film in Australia in 1961 and performing well at the British box office.
Behind the scenes, the production was a blend of high-profile talent and future legends. Gary Cooper was originally cast as Paddy but withdrew due to poor health, leading to Mitchum's casting. The crew included future director Nicolas Roeg as a second unit camera operator. While Isobel Lennart received screen credit for the screenplay, some accounts suggest author Jon Cleary wrote much of the script. The film's legacy remains strong, with critics noting its freshness and vitality, and it is still frequently cited as one of the best films to have missed out on an Academy Award win.
