How a 1998 sports comedy became the highest-grossing film in its genre
In short: The Waterboy, a film about a stuttering, socially inept water boy who discovers a hidden talent for football, was critically panned yet became a massive financial success. While critics dismissed its lowbrow humor, the movie redefined the sports comedy formula and remains a cultural touchstone more than two decades later.
Directed by Frank Coraci and starring Adam Sandler, The Waterboy was released in November 1998. The film follows Bobby Boucher, a 31-year-old water boy for the University of Louisiana who is constantly bullied until he joins the South Central Louisiana State University Mud Dogs. Despite a $20 million to $23 million production budget, the film was a commercial juggernaut, earning $39.4 million in its opening weekend alone—a November record at the time—and totaling over $190 million worldwide.
The film’s production was a departure from Sandler’s earlier work. Writer Tim Herlihy noted that while previous films like Happy Gilmore placed Sandler as a disruptive element in a straight world, The Waterboy functioned as a 'funhouse' environment where the comedy was distributed among the entire cast. This ensemble approach allowed the film to succeed even when Sandler was not on screen, creating a bizarre, heightened version of Southern college football culture.
Critical reception was sharply divided. Reviewers like Roger Ebert and Michael O'Sullivan criticized the film for its grating characterizations and low-effort gags, with Rotten Tomatoes eventually recording a 33% approval rating. Conversely, some critics found the film's outlandish, good-hearted nature endearing. Despite the mixed reviews, the film resonated with audiences, earning an 'A-' grade from CinemaScore. As of 2020, it holds the title of the highest-grossing sports comedy in history.
Interestingly, the film's production was largely centered in Central Florida, utilizing locations like DeLand and Orlando to mimic the Louisiana setting. The project almost looked very different; Kathy Bates, who played Bobby’s overprotective mother, initially threw the script away. It was only after her niece noticed Sandler’s name that she reconsidered the role. Today, the film remains a subject of interest, with Sandler expressing openness to a potential sequel in 2022.
