In short: Released in 1989, The Winter War remains Finland's most popular film, drawing over 600,000 admissions. Directed by Pekka Parikka and based on Antti Tuuri’s novel, it follows a platoon of reservists from Kauhava as they face the overwhelming might of the Red Army during the Soviet invasion of Finland.

The film centers on the experiences of the 23rd Regiment of the Finnish Army, specifically a half-platoon of reservists led by Second Lieutenant Jussi Kantola. The narrative begins on 13 October 1939, when brothers Martti and Paavo Hakala are called to active duty. After training, they are deployed to the Karelian Isthmus, where they endure the harrowing Battle of Taipale, which commenced on 6 December, Finnish Independence Day.

The production is noted for its commitment to historical authenticity, utilizing a wide array of genuine wartime vehicles and artillery, supplemented by replicas where necessary. The film depicts the grim mechanics of the conflict, including Soviet human wave attacks, artillery barrages, and the tactical use of T-26 tanks. The combat scenes are punctuated by the personal lives of the soldiers, such as Private Pentti Saari, who plays the mandolin, and the older, experienced Yrjö Alanen, whose past in the 1918 Civil War leaves him largely unfazed by the carnage.

The film’s portrayal of the war concludes with the Moscow Peace Treaty, which took effect at eleven o’clock on 13 March. Beyond its historical focus, the film weaves in cultural elements, including specific hymns like the Christmas song Enkeli taivaan and the funeral hymn Ah Jeesus Kristus armahda. While it was Finland's entry for the 63rd Academy Awards, it did not secure a nomination, though it achieved significant domestic acclaim, winning six Jussi Awards and earning director Pekka Parikka a nomination for the Golden Bear at the 1990 Berlin International Film Festival.
