Can a guerrilla war story capture the Australian psyche on the global stage?
In short: In 2010, an adaptation of John Marsden’s novel brought a fictional invasion of Australia to the screen. While it became the highest-grossing domestic film of the year in its home country, the action-adventure struggled to find a foothold with international audiences, leaving its planned sequel franchise in development limbo.
Directed by Stuart Beattie, Tomorrow, When the War Began follows seven teenagers who return from a camping trip to find their hometown of Wirrawee occupied by a foreign military force. The group, led by Ellie Linton, transitions from ordinary high school students to guerrilla fighters, sabotaging infrastructure like the Heron Bridge to disrupt the invaders' supply chain. The film’s narrative, which explores themes of survival and national anxiety, was based on the first book in Marsden’s popular heptalogy.
The production was a significant domestic undertaking, with filming occurring across New South Wales in late 2009. Despite a budget of A$27 million, the film’s financial performance was starkly divided. It dominated the Australian box office, earning over $13.5 million, and set a record for the biggest first-week DVD sales for an independently produced Australian film, moving nearly 105,000 copies. However, international returns were modest, totaling less than $3 million across the rest of the world, which hindered plans for a film sequel.
Critical reception was mixed, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 63% approval rating. Critics praised the action sequences but noted the script’s uneven character development and lingering concerns regarding the story’s portrayal of xenophobia. Comparisons were frequently drawn to the 1984 film Red Dawn. While producers initially hoped to adapt the subsequent novels, the film project eventually stalled, leading to a pivot toward a television adaptation that aired in 2016 with a new cast.
