The touchdown was once a literal 'touch' of the ground
In short: In modern football, a player only needs to break the plane of the goal line to score. But the sport's name is a linguistic fossil. Until the late 19th century, the rules required a physical connection with the earth—a requirement that vanished as the game evolved into a high-speed pursuit of space.
The term 'touchdown' is a historical holdover from the early days of gridiron football, when the sport was still extremely similar to rugby. In those early iterations, a score required the ball to actually be touched to the ground past the goal line. This requirement was officially removed in 1889, shifting the scoring mechanic to a matter of possession beyond the goal line. The evolution of the touchdown's value reflects the sport's shifting priorities. In 1883, a touchdown was worth just two points, while a goal after a touchdown was worth four. By 1884, these values flipped. It wasn't until 1898 that the 'extra point' terminology emerged, as the touchdown was worth five points and the subsequent goal added one more.
The modern six-point value was established in 1912, coinciding with the official addition of the end zone. Today, the rules are designed for extreme precision. A touchdown occurs the instant any part of the ball touches or breaks the plane of the goal line while in a player's possession. This includes touching one of the pylons. Because of the speed of the game, leagues like the NFL and CFL review all scoring plays automatically, while the NCAA's review rules vary significantly depending on the division level.
The rule change in 1889 marked a pivot from a ground-based 'landing' to a spatial 'possession' metric, mirroring the sport's transition toward a more aerial and dynamic game.
