A Soviet cult classic turns Robert Louis Stevenson into a surreal, musical, animated adventure.
In short: Created by Kievnauchfilm between 1986 and 1988, this two-part adaptation of Treasure Island blends traditional animation with live-action musical numbers. While the cartoon follows the classic tale, the live-action segments offer eccentric moral lessons on health, eventually spawning a global internet meme centered on the character Dr. Livesey.
Directed by David Cherkassky with character designs by Radna Sakhaltuev, the film is a stylistic departure from standard adaptations. Its animation aesthetic was heavily influenced by the cut-out techniques popularized by Terry Gilliam for Monty Python. The production, which spans two parts titled Captain Flint’s Map and Captain Flint’s Treasure, was completed over roughly two years. The live-action musical interludes, which warn viewers against vices like smoking and drinking, were actually a practical solution to meet production deadlines, often filmed overnight.
The narrative follows the familiar beats of the 1883 novel but infuses them with a distinct, comedic tone. Characters are introduced via dossier-style cards, a nod to the Soviet series Seventeen Moments of Spring. The plot features a jubilant Dr. Livesey, a perpetually sneezing Billy Bones, and a pirate gang that meets a grim fate due to their poor health choices. In one notable sequence, the heroes defeat their foes not through traditional combat, but by exploiting the pirates' physical exhaustion and poor lifestyle habits.
The film’s legacy has evolved significantly since its original release. In the United States, it was distributed as a shortened, animation-only version titled The Return to Treasure Island, which excised the live-action segments entirely. In 2012, the film faced potential censorship under Russian laws prohibiting the depiction of alcohol and tobacco use, but it was granted an exemption due to its status as a work of significant cultural value. By 2022, the character of Dr. Livesey achieved viral fame through an international meme featuring his confident walk set to phonk music, cementing the film's status as a lasting, if unconventional, pop-culture phenomenon.
