How a video game adaptation survived fourteen years of development hell to become a hit
In short: The 2022 film Uncharted took over a decade to reach theaters, cycling through seven directors and countless script rewrites. Despite mixed critical reception and a global pandemic that halted production, the action-adventure project defied its troubled history to become a commercial success, grossing over $400 million worldwide.
The journey of Uncharted from Naughty Dog’s video game franchise to the big screen began in 2008, when producer Avi Arad announced plans for an adaptation. What followed was a notorious period of development hell. Filmmakers like David O. Russell, Neil Burger, and Shawn Levy were attached at various stages, each bringing different visions to the project. The casting process was equally volatile; while Mark Wahlberg was an early choice for Nathan Drake, he eventually transitioned into the role of Victor Sullivan, with Tom Holland cast as the younger Drake in 2017.
Production finally commenced in March 2020, only to be immediately suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When filming resumed in July, the cast and crew faced strict health protocols, including a temporary leave for Antonio Banderas after he tested positive for the virus. The film eventually premiered in February 2022. Despite the logistical hurdles, the production team drew inspiration from the kinetic, surroundings-based fighting style of Jackie Chan to craft the film's signature action sequences.
The film’s release was not without controversy. It faced outright bans in Vietnam and the Philippines due to a map depicted on-screen that featured the nine-dash line, a symbol of Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea. Despite these geopolitical setbacks and a budget estimated at $120 million, the film resonated with audiences. It secured its place as a significant commercial success, proving that even after fourteen years of uncertainty, a well-marketed franchise adaptation could still capture global box office attention.
