Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine is a glam rock mystery inspired by Citizen Kane
In short: In this 1998 musical drama, a journalist investigates the disappearance of a fictional glam rock icon who faked his own death. Through non-linear flashbacks, the film explores the androgynous, high-stakes world of 1970s London, drawing deep parallels to the real-life relationships and personas of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed.
Directed by Todd Haynes, Velvet Goldmine follows Arthur Stuart, a journalist assigned in 1984 to uncover the truth behind Brian Slade, a glam rock star who staged his own murder a decade earlier. The film utilizes a narrative structure modeled after Orson Welles' Citizen Kane, with Stuart interviewing former associates to piece together the life of the elusive, bisexual performer. Slade, an androgynous figure, is a composite character inspired by icons like David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, Jobriath, and Marc Bolan.
The film’s aesthetic and character dynamics mirror the real-world history of the 1970s music scene. Slade’s alter ego, Maxwell Demon, and his band, Venus in Furs, echo Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Similarly, the character Curt Wild, played by Ewan McGregor, draws biographical details from Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. Haynes sought Bowie’s blessing and song catalogue for the project, but the artist refused, intending to develop his own film about the era. Despite this, the soundtrack features an array of glam rock classics and original performances by artists like Thom Yorke and members of Sonic Youth.
Beyond the music, the film is deeply rooted in the philosophy and life of Oscar Wilde, who is presented as a progenitor of the glam movement. Haynes uses the story to examine the cultural exchange between New York City and London, highlighting how these music scenes influenced one another. While the film received accolades, including a Best Artistic Contribution award at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, Bowie himself remained ambivalent, noting that he found the film's gay scenes to be its only truly successful element.
