A gritty 2007 crime drama inspired by the real motto of the NYPD
In short: Directed by James Gray, We Own the Night explores the fractured loyalties of a nightclub manager caught between his criminal associates and his police family. The film takes its title from the defunct Street Crimes Unit of the NYPD, delivering a tense, atmospheric look at 1980s Brooklyn crime.
Set in late 1980s Brooklyn, the narrative follows Bobby Grusinsky, who manages a nightclub while distancing himself from his father, Deputy Chief Burt Grusinsky, and his brother, Captain Joseph Grusinsky. Bobby’s life of hedonism is shattered when his brother’s anti-drug unit targets his employer’s nephew, a dangerous drug lord named Vadim Nezhinski. The ensuing violence, including an attempt on Joseph’s life and the eventual murder of Burt, forces Bobby to abandon his alias and join the NYPD to seek vengeance.
The film’s production and reception were marked by significant industry interest. Sony Pictures secured domestic rights for $11 million, ultimately releasing the film in October 2007. Despite a worldwide gross of $55.3 million, the film received mixed critical feedback. While some reviewers praised its intensity and atmospheric quality, others criticized the dialogue and plotting. Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore awarded the film a B- grade, reflecting the polarized nature of its reception.
Beyond the screen, the film’s title carries historical weight, referencing the motto of the NYPD's Street Crimes Unit. This unit was disbanded in 2002 and again in 2020. The film itself features a cameo by Ed Koch, who served as the Mayor of New York City during the period depicted. By June 2017, the project had generated additional revenue through home media, with $22 million in DVD sales and $32 million in rentals, cementing its place in the crime drama genre.
