In short: In Willy's Wonderland, a quiet drifter is trapped in an abandoned family entertainment center where he must survive the night against eight murderous, soul-possessed animatronic mascots. Directed by Kevin Lewis, this 2021 action-horror film embraces its own absurdity, turning a simple janitorial job into a violent, high-stakes fight for survival.

The film follows a nameless drifter whose vehicle breaks down in Hayesville, Nevada. He is coerced into cleaning the derelict Willy's Wonderland by the owner, Tex Macadoo, and local sheriff Eloise Lund. Unbeknownst to the drifter, the restaurant is a sacrificial trap; the animatronics—including Willy Weasel, Arty Alligator, and Gus Gorilla—are vessels for the souls of a notorious serial killer and his cannibalistic cult, who committed mass murder and performed satanic rituals before taking their own lives.

Screenwriter G. O. Parsons conceived the project around 2015, initially titling it Wally's Wonderland. Legal issues forced a name change, and several original character designs were swapped out during production. When the script surfaced on the Blood List, it caught the attention of Nicolas Cage, who signed on as both lead actor and producer. The film was shot in February 2020 at a decommissioned bowling alley in Marietta, Georgia, utilizing practical puppetry and design work by Molly Coffee to bring the withered mascots to life.

Though often compared to the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, director Kevin Lewis and Parsons have denied direct inspiration, instead citing films like Killer Klowns from Outer Space and Pale Rider as tonal influences. The production faced significant hurdles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced a shift from a planned theatrical release to a video-on-demand debut in February 2021. Despite a modest $5 million budget and mixed critical reception, the film developed a dedicated cult following, with reviewers praising Cage’s committed, wordless performance and the film's unapologetically ridiculous premise.

The franchise has since expanded beyond the screen. A four-issue prequel comic book series was released between 2021 and 2022, later adapted into a fan-dubbed motion comic. Additionally, a beat 'em up video game based on the film was launched, reflecting the enduring interest in this strange, gore-filled corner of modern horror cinema.
