How a classroom of pets became an operatic sensation through the art of photo-puppetry
In short: Before they were global icons, the Wonder Pets were silent guinea pigs in animated shorts. Developed by Little Airplane Productions, the series evolved into a unique sung-through musical, utilizing a 10-member live orchestra and a distinctive animation technique that breathes life into static photographs of real animals.
The origins of Wonder Pets! trace back to the creative partnership of Josh Selig and Jennifer Oxley, who first collaborated on the show Oobi. Seeking a new project, they produced two animated shorts featuring a silent guinea pig named Linny, set to classical music. These early experiments utilized a proprietary animation style Oxley invented called photo-puppetry, which involves manipulating photographs of real objects using Adobe After Effects. When these shorts were screened at an Oobi wrap party in 2003, they captured the attention of Nickelodeon, leading to a commission for a full-length series.
Transitioning from silent shorts to a half-hour format required significant changes. The team added two new characters, Tuck the turtle and Ming-Ming the duckling, to create a dynamic trio. Initially titled The Super Singing Power Pets!, the show was eventually renamed for brevity. The production process was intensive, with each episode requiring thirty-three weeks from the initial script to final delivery. The show’s signature musical format, often likened to operetta or singspiel, relies on a 10-member live orchestra, with the score sometimes incorporating regional instruments to match the pets' global adventures.
The series, which ran for 62 episodes across three seasons, debuted on March 3, 2006. It followed a rigid, comforting structure: the pets would receive a distress call in their red schoolhouse, assemble their Flyboat from classroom supplies, and work together to save an animal in need. While the show earned praise as a kid-friendly exploration of teamwork, it also faced criticism for its repetitive musical anthems. Despite the original production studio, Little Airplane, closing in 2023, the franchise saw a revival in 2024 with the release of Wonder Pets: In the City on Apple TV+, marking a new chapter for the classroom heroes.
