In short: Launched in 2009 as a weekly prime-time series on WGN America, WWE Superstars was designed to showcase talent across multiple brands. While it initially featured industry icons, the show eventually pivoted to an internet-based format before its final cancellation in 2016, marking a significant shift in wrestling media distribution.

WWE Superstars debuted on April 16, 2009, following a December 2008 agreement between WWE and WGN America. The show was intended to be a one-hour, weekly prime-time program featuring athletes from SmackDown, Raw, and the now-defunct ECW brand. Its primary function was to provide a platform for mid-to-low card performers and enhancement talent, though its early episodes notably included appearances by major stars like John Cena, Randy Orton, The Undertaker, and Triple H.

The program's domestic television run faced challenges early on. By early 2010, the show was removed from WGN-TV, which ended its availability to the Canadian audience. On March 17, 2011, WGN America announced it would not renew the show's domestic broadcast rights, citing that the series failed to meet expectations. The final domestic television broadcast aired on April 7, 2011. Following this, the show transitioned to an online format, airing on WWE.com and later the WWE Network, while continuing to be produced for international television markets.

Throughout its existence, the show underwent several logistical changes. Matches were typically taped during Monday night Raw events. Originally airing on Thursdays, the show moved to Fridays in January 2015 to accommodate SmackDown's scheduling shift. By the end of its run, the commentary team featured Tom Phillips and Corey Graves, with JoJo serving as the ring announcer. The show was officially canceled on November 28, 2016, and replaced on the WWE Network by 205 Live, while WWE Main Event took over its role in international markets.
