Can a mathematical prodigy solve the complex, irrational equation of human love?
In short: The 2014 drama X+Y follows Nathan, an autistic teenager who finds solace in numbers but struggles to navigate the unpredictable social landscape of the International Mathematical Olympiad. Inspired by a real-life prodigy, the film explores whether a mind built for logic can ever truly decode the messy reality of human connection.
Directed by Morgan Matthews, X+Y—released in the United States as A Brilliant Young Mind—tells the story of Nathan Ellis, a young maths genius grappling with autism and the loss of his father. The narrative follows Nathan as he transitions from a sheltered life under the guidance of his teacher, Martin Humphreys, to the high-pressure environment of the International Mathematical Olympiad. Along the way, he encounters Zhang Mei, a fellow student who challenges his social anxieties and forces him to confront emotions he has long kept suppressed.
While the film is grounded in the experiences of real-life mathematician Daniel Lightwing, it takes significant creative liberties. Lightwing, who won a silver medal at the 2006 Olympiad, did not lose his father in a car accident, and his real-life mentor was a woman named Miggy Biller, not a male teacher with multiple sclerosis. Furthermore, the film shifts the Olympiad setting to Cambridge, whereas Lightwing’s actual competition took place in Slovenia. Even the romantic arc, inspired by Lightwing’s relationship with a Chinese student named Zhu Yan, serves more as a dramatic vehicle than a strict biographical account.
Critical reception of the film has been varied. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 87% approval rating, with many praising its tender and perceptive portrayal of a unique mind. However, some critics, such as Godfrey Cheshire, have argued that the film relies on trite, cliché-ridden storytelling that fails to fully develop its characters. Despite these critiques, the film resonates with many for its emotional honesty. Lightwing himself noted that the film captured feelings he struggled to express, and Biller, who attended the premiere, found the blend of fact and fiction both moving and amusing.
