How a Russian comedy franchise turned the theory of six degrees into a holiday tradition
In short: In Russia, the Yolki film series has become a staple of the New Year season. Spanning eleven movies, the franchise explores the idea that every person on Earth is linked by just six handshakes. It is a cinematic celebration of optimism, coincidence, and the interconnectedness of human lives during the holidays.
The Yolki series, which debuted in 2010 under the direction of Timur Bekmambetov, taps into the cultural significance of the New Year in Russia. Much like other holiday classics such as The Irony of Fate, these films are typically released in December to capture the spirit of hope and possibility. The franchise has grown into the most successful non-animated series in the country, with eleven entries produced as of 2024.
The narrative structure of the original film is built upon the concept of six degrees of separation. Set across eleven Russian cities, the plot follows a disparate group of characters—including a student, a taxi driver, and a pair of snowboarders—whose lives intersect by chance. The central conflict involves a young orphan named Varya who claims her father is the Russian president. To prove her story, she needs him to include a specific secret message in his televised New Year's address. Her friend Vova suggests that by leveraging their social networks, they can reach the president through a chain of six connections.
The mission succeeds when a message carved into the snow at the Kremlin is spotted by the president, played by Dmitry Medvedev in a cameo. During his broadcast, he includes a phrase confirming that those who take initiative will find support from Santa Claus. This resolution serves as a narrative proof of the six-degrees theory. The franchise has since expanded through various sequels, including Yolki 2 in 2011, Yolki 3 in 2013, and a 2014 prequel titled Yolki 1914. While the series continued with Yolki 5 in 2016, Yolki 6 in 2017, and a soft reboot with Yolki 9 in 2022, Yolki 3 remains the most profitable entry as of 2018.
Beyond the main storyline, the franchise has spawned spin-offs like the 2015 film Paws, Bones & Rock'n'roll, which focused on canine characters from the third installment. The enduring popularity of these films highlights the Russian audience's appetite for stories that emphasize human connection and the miraculous nature of the holiday season.
