How a low-budget Italian horror film became a global cult phenomenon and video nasty
In short: Lucio Fulci’s 1979 film Zombi 2 was conceived as a cynical cash-in on George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. Yet, through its visceral practical effects and a haunting score, it transcended its origins to become a defining work of horror, sparking both international controversy and a lasting cinematic legacy.
Produced on a modest budget of 410 million Italian lira, Zombi 2 was never intended to be a masterpiece. Writer Dardano Sacchetti originally titled his script Nightmare Island, aiming for a return to classic zombie tropes. However, producer Fabrizio De Angelis saw an opportunity to capitalize on the success of Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, which had been released in Italy as Zombi. Under Italian copyright law, the film was rebranded as an unofficial sequel, a move that deeply frustrated director Lucio Fulci, who had been hired for his expertise in handling violent sequences.
The film is infamous for its extreme gore, particularly the eye-gouging scene and a bizarre sequence where a zombie battles a shark. These practical effects, while criticized by some as gratuitous, cemented the film's reputation. In the UK, the film became a central target of the 1980s moral panic surrounding video nasties, leading to significant censorship and de facto bans. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the film gained a dedicated cult following and eventually saw critical reappraisal as a foundational text in the zombie genre.
Beyond its shock value, scholars like Simone Brioni have interpreted the film through a postcolonial lens, suggesting that its imagery reflects deep-seated anxieties about Italy’s colonial past and contemporary immigration. Whether viewed as a cynical exploitation flick or a complex cultural artifact, Zombi 2 remains a significant influence on horror cinema, inspiring everything from later sequels to modern video games like Dead Island. Its legacy persists in the 2015 vinyl release of its score and its continued presence in horror retrospectives.
