The $1.50 hot dog that became a corporate oath
In short: Since 1984, the price of a Costco hot dog and soda has remained unchanged despite decades of inflation. This culinary icon isn't just a bargain; it is a deliberate business experiment in 'cost plus' pricing, maintained by executives who have reportedly threatened each other to keep the price steady.
The Costco hot dog combo debuted in 1984 at $1.50—a price that would have cost approximately $4.40 today if adjusted for inflation. While many retailers use 'loss leaders' to drive traffic, Costco leadership describes the product as a demonstration of their business model: operating on a fair markup rather than 'what the market will bear.' By keeping the price static, they aim to signal a commitment to value that transcends typical profit-seeking.
Maintaining this price point has required significant operational pivots. In 2013, when costs pressured margins, Costco switched from Coca-Cola to Pepsi products for the combo deal to save money. However, in early 2025, the company plans to revert to Coca-Cola products. To further control supply chain costs, Costco moved production to its own facilities in Tracy, California (starting in 2011) and Morris, Illinois (opened in 2018), which also marked a shift toward using non-kosher beef.
The hot dog has achieved legendary status within the company's history. In 2013, then-CEO Craig Jelinek reportedly approached co-founder Jim Sinegal to raise the price to $1.75 because they were 'losing our rear ends.' Sinegal famously refused, telling Jelinek that if he raised the price, he would 'kill' him, instructing him to 'figure it out' instead. This cultural weight remains; current CEO Ron Vachris has reiterated that raising the price will not happen on his watch.
