How a Thai Trucker's Tonic Became a Global Billion-Dollar Brand Myth
In short: Red Bull was not born in a boardroom, but in a Thai pharmacy. After discovering a local energy drink cured his jet lag, an Austrian entrepreneur partnered with its creator to rebrand the humble worker's tonic into a premium, global phenomenon fueled by extreme sports and carefully crafted mystery.
The story began in 1976 when Chaleo Yoovidhya introduced Krating Daeng—meaning 'red gaur'—in Thailand. It was a utilitarian drink favored by laborers and truck drivers. In 1982, Dietrich Mateschitz, then working for the manufacturer Blendax, visited Thailand and found the drink alleviated his jet lag. Seeing potential, Mateschitz and Chaleo co-founded Red Bull GmbH in 1984, each investing US$500,000. They launched the product in Austria on 1 April 1987, strategically repositioning it from a blue-collar staple to an upscale, trendy beverage.
The company’s growth was built on a 'brand myth' rather than traditional advertising, leveraging extreme sports to cultivate an aura of performance. While the original formula remains consistent, the brand has expanded into numerous variants, including sugar-free options and the 2013 launch of the 'Editions' line. Despite its success, the company has faced scrutiny. In 2014, Red Bull settled a US$13 million class-action lawsuit in New York, where plaintiffs argued the drink’s performance-enhancing claims were scientifically unsubstantiated. Additionally, the brand has navigated complex regulatory waters, with countries like France initially banning the drink over concerns regarding ingredients like taurine.
Today, Red Bull GmbH is headquartered in the small Austrian village of Fuschl am See. Ownership remains split, with the Yoovidhya family controlling 51 percent of the company. The brand’s reach is vast, with sales in 171 countries and over 13.9 billion cans sold in 2025 alone. From its origins as a regional remedy to its status as the third most valuable soft drink brand in 2021, Red Bull has mastered the art of premium positioning, even while maintaining a global supply chain that still produces its signature flavoring in Bangkok.
