In short: In 1972, three entrepreneurs launched a small juice venture with almost no industry knowledge. A single batch of carbonated apple juice fermented in its bottles, causing the caps to fly off—an accident that gave the brand its name and launched a global phenomenon.

The Snapple brand began as a part-time venture by Leonard Marsh, Hyman Golden, and Arnold Greenberg in Valley Stream, New York. At the time, the founders were far from beverage experts; Marsh famously remarked that he knew as much about making juice as he did about making an atom bomb. Their original company, Unadulterated Food Products, focused on supplying fruit juices to health food stores. The founders initially operated their business as a side project. While they built the juice company, Marsh and Golden continued running a window washing service.

The company's identity was born from a manufacturing mishap. A batch of their carbonated apple juice fermented in the bottle, creating enough pressure to launch the bottle caps into the air. This 'snappy' phenomenon inspired the name Snapple, a portmanteau of 'snappy' and 'apple.' By 1987, the company had expanded from its juice roots to include lemon tea.

The brand's trajectory has been marked by massive shifts in ownership and public perception. After being acquired by Thomas H. Lee in 1992 for an estimated $140 million, the company was sold to Quaker Oats in 1994 for $1.7 billion. However, the brand has also faced scrutiny. In 2009, lawsuits challenged the company's health claims regarding ingredients like high fructose corn syrup. While a 2011 court dismissed one suit regarding 'all natural' labeling, the company eventually shifted its formula to use sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup to address consumer concerns. The brand's popularity surged during the 1990s and 2000s due to various television sponsorships and pop-culture references. This growth eventually led to the creation of the Dr Pepper Snapple Group in 2008.
