Mastering summer garden maintenance: pruning, disease management, and strategic planting for success
In short: Summer is a high-stakes season for any gardener. By shifting your focus from winter-style growth to fruit production, managing soil-borne pathogens, and timing your sowings carefully, you can transform a struggling plot into a thriving, productive space. Here is how to refine your approach for better results.
Late summer is the ideal window for pruning fruit trees like cherries. Unlike winter pruning, which encourages vigorous vegetative growth, summer pruning creates a more modest response, allowing you to shape trees to a manageable height. For a 'Stella' cherry, the goal is an open vase shape with even limbs. Use sharp tools to make angled cuts above buds, removing damaged growth and shortening upright branches by two or three buds above a fruiting spur. This redirects the tree's energy into flower and fruit development while making netting and harvesting significantly easier.
Disease management is equally critical, particularly for tomatoes. If you encounter fungal or bacterial issues, prevention is superior to treatment. Practice crop rotation by avoiding the same planting spot for at least three years, ensure adequate spacing for airflow, and remove lower leaves that might contact the soil and act as a bridge for infection. If disease strikes, remove affected plants immediately—do not compost them, as they should be buried deeply elsewhere. While copper oxychloride is an option for organic gardens, it should be a last resort due to potential impacts on soil health.
Finally, prepare for the transition to cooler seasons by supporting winter crops like brassicas with a weak liquid feed. Simultaneously, maintain a consistent supply of produce by sowing fast-turnaround crops. For seeds like coriander, which are slow to germinate and prone to bolting in heat, cover the row with a board to maintain moisture. Check the seeds two or three times weekly, removing the cover as soon as germination begins. Every challenge in the garden is an opportunity to observe, learn, and refine your controls for the following year.
