How a depleted cow paddock became a sanctuary for eighty bird species
In short: In the hills above Victor Harbor, a retired couple turned a degraded landscape into a thriving ecosystem. Through decades of careful planting and soil management, they have successfully reconnected native flora with a diverse array of Australian wildlife.
The transformation of this South Australian property began in 2003, when Pat and Gerald Uppill acquired a block of land that had previously served as a cow paddock. The project was not an overnight success; it required nearly 20 years of dedicated labor and a period of experimentation with various plant species. The couple eventually found that the most effective strategy for supporting the existing mature gum trees and remnant bushland was to focus on native plantings.
The garden's design leverages the site's natural topography and soil variations. In areas with very sandy soil, the Uppills established an ornamental banksia garden featuring species from across the continent, such as the prostrate Coast Banksia and the vibrant Scarlet Banksia. A key feature of the landscape is a perched swamp—a rare type of wetland situated on a hillside rather than in a gully. This water source is vital for the surrounding bushland, providing essential breeding and feeding grounds for local fauna.
This ecological restoration exists alongside a productive domestic space. Near the residence, the Uppills maintain an orchard containing 22 fruit trees, which are protected from the local wildlife, as well as a vegetable patch. The result is a balanced ecosystem that supports at least 80 different bird species, including honeyeaters, lorikeets, finches, and the Superb Fairy-wren. The garden stands as a testament to the long-term commitment required to restore biodiversity to degraded Australian landscapes.
