How to use nesting pots to maximize your plant propagation space

In short: Growing multiple plant cuttings can be a logistical challenge, especially when different species develop at different rates. By using a clever nesting technique inspired by Russian dolls, you can grow three different varieties in a single footprint while maintaining the separation required for healthy development.

The 'babushka' method involves using three different sized pots—small, medium, and large—that fit inside one another. This tiered arrangement allows a gardener to manage various plant cuttings simultaneously in a very compact area. To set this up, you place the medium pot inside the large pot and fill the surrounding gaps with potting mix until the rims are flush. You then repeat this process with the smallest pot, ensuring all pot tops remain level at the top.

Once the structure is built, the gaps between the pots and the center of the smallest pot are filled with potting mix. It is important to pack the soil firmly, potentially using a tool like an old butter knife to ensure a stable base. To facilitate planting, you can use a pencil or a chopstick as a dibber stick to create holes for the cuttings. This allows you to plant different varieties in the outer rings and the center without them competing for space.

To optimize the environment for root development, you can construct a mini greenhouse. This is done by inserting two 50cm lengths of wire bent into U-shapes into the pot so they cross at a right angle. A recycled plastic bag is then secured over the wires with a large rubber band or string. This creates a humid microclimate. You will know it is time to water when you no longer see condensation inside the bag. If you need to inspect the roots, the inner pots can be lifted out and the cuttings separated using a garden knife.
