How to transform a standard letterbox into a functional pollination station
In short: Why settle for a simple mailbox when you can build a dual-purpose hub for mail and nature? By integrating plant space and bee habitats into your post design, you create a modern information transmission and pollination station that serves both your neighbors and the local ecosystem.
To construct this multifunctional structure, use exotic Cypress Pine (Cupressus macrocarpa), specifically salvaged from fallen windbreak trees. This timber offers reasonable durability when placed in-ground for up to 15 years. The design utilizes two 50mm thick sleepers that serve a dual purpose: providing structural stability for the box and acting as the in-ground posts. The total height of the box should be just over 1m, with an additional 600mm buried underground to ensure stability.
The assembly relies on a triple 'H' frame made of upper bracing timbers, with 10mm thick cladding nailed into place. For the planting component, a timber box lined with galvanised iron can be mounted on the roof. Using an old aluminium BBQ tray insert within this space makes it easy to renovate or replant. For optimal moisture retention, use a high-quality potting mix containing 1/5 coir peat. To ensure drainage, the tray should have holes at one end, and the side saddle—designed for pot plants or sharing excess produce—should be lined with galvanised mesh.
Efficiency and ecology are central to the design. The mail slot should be positioned between 900mm and 1200mm off the ground to assist postal workers. For the hardware, a hinged back allows easy access, secured with a lock and an old valve used as a handle. To avoid the CO2 emissions associated with the cement industry, skip concrete footings; instead, stabilise the box using gravel compacted with a crowbar and 'dead-men' rocks. Finally, attach a 100mm diameter galvanised pipe to the side, which can hold local newspapers or hollow sticks to provide habitat for local bees.
