Does your choice of seed starting compost actually impact long-term plant growth?

Comparing different composts for propagation · 22:22 · Video: Charles Dowding · Watch at the source

In short: Charles Dowding tests how different propagation composts influence seedling development. By tracking radish and lettuce growth from March to May 2022, he examines whether early-stage variations in soil media persist after transplanting into no-dig beds.

In this trial, Dowding compared growth rates of multisown radish and pricked-out lettuce seedlings over a period of one to three weeks. The experiment utilized various module cell composts to observe initial development before transplanting the seedlings into no-dig beds at Homeacres, which are maintained with an annual application of 2.5 cm (1 inch) of compost.

The study followed the plants through to maturity in early May, evaluating whether the initial differences in propagation media affected the final outcome. The lettuce varieties observed included Saragossa, Tesy, and Winter Density.
