Why bamboo is more than just a fast-growing garden plant

Everything Bamboo! | Discovery | Gardening Australia · 10:52 · Video: Gardening Australia · Watch at the source

In short: Inspired by their time living in Asia, Sam and Matt Birkwood now manage an Australian nursery dedicated to bamboo. This segment explores the diversity of this plant, covering the differences between clumping and running varieties and highlighting the many ways bamboo can be utilized.

After returning to Australia approximately five years ago, the Birkwoods acquired a nursery where they cultivate around 100 distinct varieties of bamboo, offering 35 for sale. The collection includes diverse types such as the Slender Weaver's Bamboo, Buddha Belly's Bamboo, White Bamboo, and Thai Silk Bamboo.

The segment distinguishes between clumping bamboo, such as the Bambusa genus, and running bamboo, which belongs to the Phyllostachys genus. Because certain species can act as environmental weeds depending on the local region, gardeners are advised to verify the suitability of specific varieties before planting.
