Unexpected Honey Harvest: A First-Year Beekeeping Success Story
In short: Charles Dowding shares his experience establishing three new bee colonies at his Homeacres garden. Despite a delayed start, the bees thrived, allowing for a surprising honey harvest just three months after their arrival.
In February, Dowding ordered three colonies of Buckfast bees, a breed noted for their calm temperament. Due to a cold spring that hampered breeding, the bees did not arrive until June 22nd. Although the initial colony sizes were small, the bees proved to be industrious foragers.
With guidance from Briony Plant and the Black Bee Honey Company, the hives were monitored every one to two weeks throughout the summer. By autumn, the colonies had grown substantially. The team prioritized the health of the bees, leaving a significant portion of the honey for the colonies to overwinter and utilizing thyme-based treatments for varroa mites.
