In short: Hot composting is the secret to rapid soil enrichment, transforming organic matter into nutrient-dense compost in weeks rather than months. By harnessing the power of millions of microbes, this method generates intense heat to break down materials quickly. Learn how to build a self-heating system that keeps your garden thriving.

Hot composting relies on the intense activity of micro-organisms and fungi to decompose organic matter at high speeds. Unlike cool systems that rely on worms, a hot compost pile must be at least one cubic metre in size to generate the necessary heat. Ideally, the pile should reach 60°C; temperatures exceeding this threshold can kill the essential microbes responsible for the breakdown process. Regular aeration is critical to managing this internal temperature and ensuring the system functions efficiently.

The foundation of a successful pile is a precise balance of carbon-rich 'browns' and nitrogen-rich 'greens'. Browns, such as straw, cardboard, and sticks, provide energy and structure, while greens like food scraps, grass clippings, and coffee grounds supply nitrogen. A successful ratio requires roughly twice as much brown material as green. To maintain the ideal environment, the pile should be kept moist but not saturated. Adding diverse organic inputs like comfrey can further stimulate microbial activity, while a thick layer of straw on top acts as an insulating blanket.

Construction begins with a base layer of twigs and sticks to facilitate drainage and airflow, topped with wet newspaper. When building the pile, it is important to avoid adding meat, dairy, bread, or weeds that contain seeds, bulbs, or runners, as these can attract pests or introduce unwanted growth. After two weeks, the pile should be turned and moved into a second bay to continue the process. When the material resembles crumbly chocolate cake, the compost is ready for use, providing a potent source of nutrients and moisture for the garden.
