In short: How do elite stadiums maintain a perfect grass surface under the stress of professional sports? The answer lies in a hybrid technology that blends biology with industrial engineering. By weaving synthetic fibers into the earth, designers have created a surface that behaves like nature but performs like a machine.

Developed and patented in 1993 by the Dutch company Desso Sports, the technology known as GrassMaster represents a shift from purely organic landscaping to hybrid engineering. While it is now marketed by Tarkett Sports, the core mechanism remains a sophisticated reinforcement of natural grass with artificial components. This system is designed to provide the aesthetic and ecological benefits of real turf while offering the structural stability required for high-traffic athletic events.

The technical execution involves a high-precision installation process. Using computer-controlled machinery, workers vertically inject 20 million polypropylene (PP) fibers into the soil across the entire playing area. These fibers are approximately 20 cm long and are pushed 18 cm into the ground, leaving just 2 cm protruding above the surface. They are arranged in a dense grid, with each fiber spaced roughly 2 cm apart in both directions. This specific geometry ensures that the synthetic elements provide a consistent, level plane for athletes.

The biological interaction is what makes the system durable. As the natural grass grows, its root system entwines with the polypropylene fibers. This physical connection encourages the roots to expand both deeper and wider into the substrate, anchoring the turf more firmly than natural grass could achieve alone. Because the system can be installed before seeding, after seeding, or even on existing grass sods, it offers a versatile solution for sports facilities seeking to minimize maintenance and maximize surface integrity.

By combining the resilience of polypropylene with the regenerative properties of living grass, the technology addresses the primary weakness of natural pitches: soil displacement and root tearing. It allows for a surface that can withstand heavy usage while remaining a living, breathing ecosystem.
