Why autumn is the most critical season for a healthy, lush lawn
In short: While most gardeners focus on spring, the real work happens in autumn. From aerating compacted soil to managing grass types, the steps you take now determine whether your lawn thrives or becomes a weed-choked mess by spring.
Autumn serves as a vital preparation period, particularly for those managing heavy or compacted soil. One of the most effective methods is aeration, which involves driving a fork halfway into the ground and wiggling it to allow air and water to penetrate the soil profile. For larger lawns, hiring a coring machine or aerator is a practical option. This process is best performed once every 12 months to maintain soil health.
Care strategies must shift depending on your grass variety. Cool-season grasses, such as rye, bluegrass, or tall fescue, benefit from being mown shorter in autumn to allow sunlight and warmth to reach the thatch, especially in shaded spots. Conversely, warm-season grasses that grow via runners should not be cut too close during cooler months; maintaining a higher mowing level helps protect the plants from frost and aids their spring recovery.
To combat weeds, which can outcompete turf during cooler months, it is essential to hand-remove them as they appear and use a mower with a catcher to collect weed seeds. For well-worn patches, top-dressing with fine topsoil and a little fertiliser can be highly effective. Additionally, if the soil is acidic, applying about a handful of lime or dolomite per square metre can help 'sweeten' the ground, though more may be required for very acidic soils.
Hydration is also key to maintaining greenery heading into winter. Providing a deep watering once or twice a week during autumn is recommended. You can test soil moisture using the 'screwdriver test': if a screwdriver cannot easily penetrate three or four inches into the soil, it is time to increase irrigation.
