Why your garden weeds might actually be beneficial wildflowers

How to Easily Deal with Weeds in your Garden · 11:06 · Video: Huw Richards · Watch at the source

In short: We often view weeds as enemies to be eradicated, but they are simply plants growing where we do not want them. Moving away from chemical weedkillers can protect your soil, your pets, and even the local pollinators that rely on these native species.

The urge to reach for chemical weedkillers often stems from the difficulty of managing garden growth, but these substances carry significant environmental costs. The RHS notes that weedkillers have a large carbon footprint due to their manufacture, packaging, and transportation. Furthermore, runoff and accidental spills can pollute surface and groundwater, threatening aquatic wildlife. There are also ongoing concerns regarding the long-term effects of chemical exposure on human health.

Beyond environmental pollution, weedkillers can inadvertently damage your garden's productivity. For instance, the active ingredient clopyralid, found in many selective lawn weedkillers, can bind to grass and remain active in clippings. If these clippings are added to a home compost bin, the resulting media can distort or kill your garden plants. Even commercial potting composts have been known to cause damage through contamination.

Fortunately, non-chemical alternatives are safer for children and pets and can be highly effective. The strategy depends on the type of weed you are facing. Annual weeds are generally shallow-rooted and easier to remove by hand, though they produce vast amounts of seed. Perennial weeds are more persistent, often requiring the removal of deep root systems or the repeated cutting of top growth to weaken the plant. In some cases, using barriers or smothering techniques with fabrics can manage seedlings.

A more sustainable approach involves a relaxed perspective. Many garden weeds are actually UK native wildflowers that support biodiversity. By designating specific areas—such as a species-rich lawn or a wildlife corner—to remain less cultivated, you can boost biodiversity and reduce your overall weeding workload.
