How to transform a small patch into a continuous summer salad harvest
In short: Home-grown salad leaves offer more colour and diversity than supermarket packs. Whether you use patio pots or a sunny garden patch, you can enjoy fresh, tender greens in as little as four weeks during summer. The secret lies in strategic planting and clever soil preparation to keep crops coming.
To achieve a successful harvest, start with soil preparation. Fast-growing greens are hungry plants; adding a full barrow-load of compost and some blood and bone provides essential nutrients. When planning your layout, place taller crops on the southern side of the bed to prevent them from shading out smaller plants located to the north.
For a continuous supply, use a staggered planting method. For example, you can plant seedlings and then sow a light cover of seeds around them. By the time the early crop is ready for harvest, the second supply will already be growing. This 'cut-and-come-again' approach allows you to snip leaves and let the plants regrow, providing multiple harvests from the same plant.
Variety and support are key to a diverse salad bed. You might include 'Russian Giant' sunflowers, which can reach 3m in height, or 'Gold Nugget' pumpkins, which stay compact at about 1m square. For rambling varieties like 'Marketmore 76' cucumbers, a wire mesh cylinder can provide necessary support. To attract pollinators, consider planting flowers like native violet, which also offers edible flowers for decoration.
Timing and environment also play a vital role. In summer, it is best to plant seedlings during the cooler part of the day, such as late afternoon, to help them settle in overnight. While many crops thrive in sunny patches, some plants like native violet prefer semi-shaded spots.
