How to transform your garden by growing vertically
In short: Why let a single pumpkin sprawl across your entire garden bed? By mastering vertical supports, you can triple your crop yield, improve airflow to prevent disease, and keep heavy fruits safely out of reach of ground-based pests.
Vertical gardening is more than a space-saving trick; it is a method for optimizing plant health. By lifting vines like squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes off the soil, you increase airflow around the foliage, which reduces the risk of disease. For heavy-fruiting varieties like spaghetti squash, sturdy structures are essential to prevent the weight of the fruit from crushing the plant.
One effective method involves using bamboo stakes, which are lightweight, strong, and often free. For 'leaner' vines like pumpkins, you can create a ladder-like structure by tying 3m-shaped stakes at an angle in raised mounds. By placing sets of stakes roughly 3m apart and adding horizontal rungs every 50cm, you create a stable climbing surface. For more vigorous plants, you can even create a 'bean sandwich' by erecting two frames 10-15cm apart, allowing the plants to climb the space between them for easy harvesting.
If you are working with heavier crops or perennial varieties like the scarlet runner bean, more robust engineering is required. You can use concrete reinforcing wire held between four hardwood stakes to create a sturdy frame. For smaller, lighter crops like peas, a simple cylinder made from 1m of square-mesh wire can be used and easily stored away during winter.
Sustainability is also key. You can repurpose old materials like rabbit runs for low A-frames, use metal swing frames draped in jute netting for cucumbers, or even use bendy willow branches from coppiced trees to support dwarf peas. These creative structures add vertical interest and can even turn a vegetable patch into a functional tunnel for children to explore.
