Master the art of garden paving by building the perfect foundation for your path
In short: A beautiful garden path is only as durable as the ground beneath it. Before you lay a single paver, you must calculate the depth of your base layers and choose a pattern that suits your traffic needs. Proper preparation ensures your hard work remains level and stable for years to come.
The longevity of any paving project depends entirely on the quality of the base. Preparation begins by digging to a total depth of approximately 160mm. This space accommodates a 75-100mm layer of road base at the bottom, topped by 25mm of paving sand, and finally the 40mm pavers themselves. Compacting the surface at every stage is essential to prevent future shifting, as the base must be completely flat to support the weight of the pavers above.
Selecting the right material and pattern is equally critical. Brick is a highly durable choice for driveways, where a herringbone pattern is recommended to lock the individual pieces together. For footpaths, you might opt for brick or crazy paving, though the latter requires significant patience due to the varying thickness of the pieces. Sandstone offers a natural aesthetic but requires caution, as its porous nature makes it susceptible to staining. Regardless of the material, always ensure you identify the top of the paver, which is distinguished by slightly curved edges.
Precision during installation is achieved through the use of string lines and square metal rails. These rails act as tracks, allowing you to maintain consistent levels and even create a slight fall to direct rainwater toward garden beds. Once the pavers are laid, you must secure the edges to prevent movement. A haunch of cement placed under and against the perimeter of the path provides the necessary structural support, which can then be neatened with a floater tool to ensure a professional finish.
Before starting, assess the specific demands of your site. High-traffic areas or paths intended for vehicles require more substantial reinforcement to handle the increased pressure. If your soil is reactive, this becomes even more vital. By measuring your space accurately and consulting with local suppliers regarding the volume of materials needed, you can avoid common pitfalls and create a functional, long-lasting garden feature.
