How to keep your garden thriving with the wicking planter method
In short: Wicking planters offer a clever way to keep plants consistently moist by creating a subterranean water reservoir. However, even these high-performance systems eventually suffer from sediment buildup and exhausted soil. Learning to rejuvenate these containers ensures your edibles continue to boom rather than struggling in stale, nutrient-depleted earth.
The wicking planter functions by creating a dual-layered system. At the base, a layer of expanded clay balls or 7mm scoria acts as a reservoir. A layer of geotextile fabric is placed over these balls to separate them from the premium potting mix above. This setup allows plants with a preference for 'wet feet' and damper conditions—such as betel leaf, kangkong, and Moroccan mint—to draw moisture upward consistently as needed.
Over time, these systems face two primary issues: root binding and sediment accumulation. Vigorous plants like Moroccan mint can become pot-bound, where roots circle the container and eventually strangle the plant, blocking access to water and nutrients. Simultaneously, the reservoir layer can become clogged with soil, sediment, and sludge, which compromises the wicking action and drainage of the planter.
To rejuvenate the system, the planter must be stripped back to its core. This involves removing the plant, untangling and pruning the roots to ensure they are balanced with the top growth, and cleaning the clay balls. The balls should be removed and hosed down to clear away sludge. Finally, the old, 'washed out' potting mix must be replaced with a fresh Australian standard premium mix, filled to about 20mm below the lip to ensure proper functionality.
By maintaining the geotextile fabric and clearing the drainage holes, the planter remains a long-term asset. This cycle of rejuvenation—cleaning the reservoir, pruning the roots, and refreshing the medium—prevents the decline of the plants and extends the life of the hardware.
