How to turn a standard picture frame into a living wall
In short: Succulents are the ultimate drought-tolerant plants, but they don't have to stay in pots on the ground. By repurposing a simple picture frame and wire netting, you can create a vertical succulent display that brings a textured, living gallery to your walls or fences.
The project relies on the hardy nature of succulents, which are prized for their ability to thrive in dry conditions. To begin, a standard picture frame is stripped of its artwork and treated with waterproof paint. The core structure involves attaching wire netting to the frame and constructing a three-sided timber box. This box is screwed into the frame with the open side facing upward, creating a reservoir for the growing medium.
Preparation is key to ensuring the plants survive the transition to a vertical plane. Before planting, the box is filled with potting mix through the wire mesh and tapped down to settle. It is essential to use a dibber to create holes for the cuttings, as this prevents damage to delicate stems. For a balanced aesthetic, the designer suggests placing draping varieties at the bottom and sides to create a cascading effect once the frame is hung.
The most critical phase is the establishment period. The frame must lie flat for four to eight weeks to allow the cuttings to develop a robust root system. Only after this period is the top of the box opened for watering and the frame secured to a wall using heavy-duty wire. This method transforms a decorative object into a functional piece of horticultural art, suitable for courtyards, sheds, or fences.
Because succulents are so versatile, they can be grown in almost any container, from old bathtubs to tea pots. However, the vertical frame offers a unique spatial solution for gardeners who want to maximize greenery in small areas while maintaining the low-maintenance benefits of drought-tolerant species.
