How to maintain a lush lawn without heavy chemical use
In short: A beautiful lawn does not require excessive resources or harsh chemicals. By focusing on soil health, proper mowing heights, and targeted organic treatments, you can create a resilient turf that naturally resists invasive species and thrives in the heat.
The secret to a weed-resistant lawn lies in the thickness of the sward. When mowing, avoid cutting below approximately 5cm, particularly during the summer months. Maintaining this height creates a dense layer of grass that shades out invasive weeds while trapping dew and moisture to prevent soil evaporation. Conversely, mowing too low creates bald patches that serve as entry points for weeds.
For targeted weed control, different species require different tactics. For invasive plants like flickweed (Cardamine hirsutsa), consistent weeding is essential to prevent infestation. However, for plants like oxalis, physical disturbance can be counterproductive as it spreads underground bulbs; instead, pouring boiling water directly over the plant can be effective, though multiple applications may be necessary. For larger infestations of flat weeds like bindii, an iron sulphate solution can be used. A precise mixture of 2 tablespoons of iron sulphate per 9 litres of water works well, provided the powder is dissolved in a fine fabric like pantyhose first to prevent clogging your watering can. Use caution, as this solution can stain paving and kill surrounding plants.
Long-term lawn vitality depends on soil structure and nutrition. Every spring, as growth resumes, aerating the soil with a garden fork can help. By inserting the fork halfway down the tines and gently lifting the turf, you create air pockets that allow water and nutrients to reach deeper roots, while also encouraging beneficial earthworm activity. To feed the lawn, sieving pulverised sheep manure over the surface provides fine nutrients that stimulate growth and support the soil's ecosystem.
